NOT QUITE PRESENT
In a room quite different than this one, with stark white walls and stacked chairs, the question of devotion to the present took form. Is it possible to be present in a world that is in constant motion? We are simultaneously completely isolated and completely inundated. We must always keep one eye on the road ahead as the backs of our minds seek escape from the present moment. We are plunged into a situation of ambiguity, of transience between two worlds: one that is and one that could be.
Living this state of transience becomes an art, a dance each one of us learns and modulates, adding our own histories to the moves. We do this to survive, to feel and show that we do in fact exist while we braid together our countless worries. These statements of existence sometimes harmonize, syncopate and form dialogues. These dialogues tend to exist for a fleeting moment, disappearing into the void as quickly as they materialize. But if they are sustained, then something new maybe born.
This show was conceived from such dialogues. The interactions and reflections of our unique forms of perceiving our realities, of navigating the maze of presence and absence, come together to present something outside the binary. Perhaps it is an understanding of the multitudes of different states we inhabit, perhaps an appreciation for distances traversed, or perhaps a celebration of being in-between, not fully complete, not quite present.
